Robert Altman’s penchant for sprawling ensemble play and genre revisionism led him naturally to put his own iconoclastic spin on the wedding comedy. Here he wrangles perhaps the most expansive cast of his career—nearly fifty characters in total, played by the likes of Carol Burnett, Geraldine Chaplin, Mia Farrow, Vittorio Gassman, and Lillian Gish—in a masterful high-wire act of social satire and family drama. On the occasion of the wedding between Dino Corelli (Desi Arnaz Jr.), scion of an old-money Chicago dynasty with rumored mob connections, and Muffin Brenner (Amy Stryker), a nouveau riche daughter of the South, two clans converge for a day of escalating chaos that will force them to confront the skeletons haunting their family closets.
