Directed by Liliana Cavani • 2002 • United Kingdom
Starring John Malkovich, Dougray Scott, Lena Headey
From the third entry in Patricia Highsmith’s celebrated series of novels centered on the charming sociopath Tom Ripley—previously adapted by Wim Wenders as THE AMERICAN FRIEND—comes this thriller about a terminally ill picture framer whose desperate need for money leads him to the malicious Ripley and an escalating spiral of violence and murder. Married and living in an Italian villa, Tom Ripley (John Malkovich) has become excessively wealthy through the spoils of his criminal exploits. At a party, a minor social offense becomes a reason for Ripley to seek revenge. When a friend (Ray Winstone) asks for Tom’s help with a murder, the dangerous Ripley sees a chance to kill two birds with one stone.
