Directed by Ondi Timoner • 2024 • United States
Twenty years ago, the emerging indie-sleaze underground was rocked by DIG!, Ondi Timoner’s rockumentary about two Gen X bands and their journey to alternative-rock glory. Shot over nearly a decade, DIG! explores the collision of art and commerce through the star-crossed friendship and bitter rivalry of dueling bands the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Through their loves, obsessions, gigs, arrests, death threats, and uppers and downers, they stage a self-proclaimed revolution in the music industry, coming to the brink of long-shot mainstream success. DIG! XX—a bigger, crazier expanded reimagining of the original cut featuring more than forty minutes of never-before-seen footage—reminds us why the original is canon and why, sometimes, more is better.
