Directed by Douglas Sirk • 1947 • United States
Starring George Sanders, Lucille Ball, Charles Coburn
Douglas Sirk brings a surfeit of menacing, fog-shrouded atmosphere to this wonderfully eccentric blend of mystery and comedy. A serial killer is on the loose in London, luring young women into his web through ads placed in the personal column. Scotland Yard’s bait to ensnare the villain is a young American dance-hall girl (Lucille Ball, in one of her finest big screen roles), who encounters a series of likely suspects, including the ever-rakish George Sanders as a sophisticated playboy and a brilliant Boris Karloff as a mad fashion designer.
