Starring James Caan, Joanna Moore, Robert Duvall
Robert Altman’s second credited feature film as director—though he was fired from the production for his then-radical use of overlapping dialogue—is a space-race drama lent extra authenticity thanks to the cooperation of NASA. The race to the moon between competing superpowers the United States and the Soviet Union has reached fever pitch. With both sides poised to land the first man on the moon, the U.S. learns that the Russians are about to launch a mission. Now, in a desperate attempt to best the Soviets, the Americans accelerate their own space program. Risking failure before the eyes of the world, NASA bypasses its own testing and safety protocols and begins the final countdown.
