Look at Me
Directed by Agnès Jaoui • 2004 • France
Starring Marilou Berry, Agnès Jaoui, Jean-Pierre Bacri
Writer/director Agnès Jaoui and cowriter Jean-Pierre Bacri also star in this affecting film that won the award for best screenplay at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Lolita Cassard (Marilou Berry) is an overweight twenty-year-old desperate to be noticed by her dismissive and abusing father, famous novelist and publisher Etienne Cassard (Bacri). But papa is too involved in his power and position to notice much besides his young trophy wife (Virginie Desarnauts). Lolita’s voice teacher (Jaoui) begins taking her student more seriously when she learns she is the daughter of a literary lion who could help her struggling husband’s writing career. LOOK AT ME is a moving study in power, self-image, family dynamics, and the redemptive force of love and music.
