Manny & Lo

Manny & Lo

Directed by Lisa Krueger • 1996 • United States
Starring Scarlett Johansson, Aleksa Palladino, Mary Kay Place

An eleven-year-old Scarlett Johansson received her first starring role in this charmingly oddball road movie, in which she plays one half of a pair of orphaned sisters who run away from their foster homes and hit the road for a crime spree that ends with them kidnapping an eccentric baby-store clerk (Mary Kay Place)—a lonely middle-aged woman who may need the girls just as much as they need her. Graced with a rich sensitivity toward its wayward young heroines, the feature debut from writer-director Lisa Krueger deftly balances wry comedy with poignant insights into the complex relationships between mothers, daughters, and sisters. Kreuger’s short film BEST OFFER, which premiered at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, is also available to watch here.
