The daughter of screen legends Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni playfully deconstructs her own illustrious lineage in this charmingly mischievous meta-cinematic bonbon from director Christophe Honoré. When she’s instructed during an audition to “play it more Mastroianni than Deneuve,” Chiara undergoes an identity crisis and makes the startling decision to quite literally transform herself into her famous father—dressing, acting, and living as him, much to the bewilderment of her friends and family, including her mother (Deneuve, gamely sending up her own image). Filled to the brim with slyly self-reflexive in-jokes, Marcello mio is a delightful, gender-bending love letter to two generations of cinematic royalty.
