The original dance “Appalachian Spring,” which premiered at the Library of Congress on October 30, 1944, was part of the Graham company repertoire for many years before Nathan Kroll documented it. Here dance critic Deborah Jowitt compares excerpts of an earlier filmed performance of the dance, featuring Martha Graham, Eric Hawkins, and Merce Cunningham, with the 1958 film.
