That Most Important Thing: Love

That Most Important Thing: Love

Directed by Andrzej Żuławski • 1975 • France
Starring Romy Schneider, Fabio Testi, Jacques Dutronc

Struggling B-movie actress Nadine (a César Award–winning Romy Schneider in a startlingly raw performance) attracts the attention of Servais (Fabio Testi), a porno photographer who attempts to give her career a boost by arranging a starring role for her in a postmodern production of RICHARD III opposite a crazed costar (Klaus Kinski), thereby incurring the jealousy of Nadine’s unsettlingly jovial cinephile husband (Jacques Dutronc). POSSESSION director Andrzej Żuławski amplifies the screeching, fever-pitch melodrama via incessantly roving camerawork and a shattering score by Georges Delerue.
