When LA switchboard operator Norah Larkin (Anne Baxter) is given the brush-off by her boyfriend on her birthday, she seeks solace in a rebound date with the caddish Harry Prebble (Raymond Burr). A drunken night ensues in which Norah fends off would be-rapist Prebble with a fireplace poker. But when she awakens to the news that Prebble is dead, Norah is left to wonder: did she do it?
