The Ghost Ship
Directed by Mark Robson • 1943 • United States
Starring Richard Dix, Russell Wade, Edith Barrett
Perhaps the least well known of Val Lewton’s groundbreaking horror films (due to a plagiarism suit that kept it out of circulation for decades), this atmospheric thriller concerns a young sailor (Russell Wade) who takes a job aboard a ship captained by a disturbed seaman (Richard Dix) descending into madness—and possibly murder. While the title—as with many of Lewton’s films—implies supernatural shocks, what plays out is actually a complex and deeply unsettling tale of all-too-human monstrousness.
