The Last Movie
Directed by Dennis Hopper • 1971 • United States
Starring Dennis Hopper, Stella Garcia, Don Gordon
Dennis Hopper’s radical, much-mythologized cult classic follows a Hollywood movie crew in the midst of making a western in a remote Peruvian village. When production wraps, Hopper, as the baleful stuntman Kansas, remains, attempting to find redemption in the isolation of Peru and in the arms of a former sex worker. Meanwhile, the local Indigenous people have taken over the abandoned set and begun to stage a ritualistic reenactment of the production—with Kansas as their sacrificial lamb. Widely unseen for nearly fifty years after its notoriously troubled production, this thrillingly innovative metafiction head trip—greatly influenced by Bruce Conner and the French New Wave as well as the pop and abstract artists Hopper revered—reemerges as a work of singular, audacious vision by one of New Hollywood’s most legendary mavericks.
