The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir

The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir

Directed by Shirley MacLaine and Claudia Weill • 1975 • United States
Starring Shirley MacLaine

In 1973, the Chinese government invited a diverse group of American women—led by actor and activist Shirley MacLaine—to visit China for a rare, firsthand glimpse of life in a country that was still largely closed to the West. The journey, beautifully captured on 16 mm by Claudia Weill (later the director of GIRLFRIENDS), is an invaluable record of Maoist China, as the women encounter everyday people at their homes, farms, schools, and hospitals and compare and contrast the vastly different experiences and conditions of women in both countries.
