The Rainbow
Directed by Ken Russell • 1989 • United Kingdom, United States
Starring Sammi Davis, Paul McGann, Amanda Donohoe
Having previously brought “Women in Love” to the screen to great acclaim, Ken Russell returned to the world of D. H. Lawrence with this relatively restrained (by the director’s usually extreme standards, anyway) adaptation of his novel “The Rainbow,” which recounts the lives of the same characters in their younger years. Born into a wealthy Victorian family, the free-spirited Ursula Brangwen (Sammi Davis) finds erotic awakening in a lesbian relationship with her teacher Winifred Inger (Amanda Donohoe), leading her on a quixotic pursuit to find personal liberation in the face of repression and conformity.
