Brooding gothic atmosphere and an intense performance from James Mason (at the height of his British stardom just before he decamped for Hollywood) crank up the tension in this Hitchcockian psychological thriller. Mason plays the brilliant brain surgeon Michael Joyce, whose torrid affair with a married woman (Rosamund John) ends in tragedy when she dies in a fall out a window. Suspecting foul play on the part of his beloved’s scheming sister-in-law (Pamela Kellino, who cowrote the script and who was Mason’s wife at the time), Joyce devises a diabolical plan to get revenge.
