A collaboration between musician and artist ANOHNI and pioneering video artist Charles Atlas (HAIL THE NEW PURITAN, BECAUSE WE MUST), TURNING follows the 2006 European tour of Antony and the Johnsons. Having risen to visibility after being awarded the UK Mercury Prize in 2005, ANOHNI elected to invite thirteen female artists, outsiders, and NYC transsexuals to join her on an ambassadorial presentation across Europe, at theaters including the Olympia and the Barbican. Iconic participants, including Connie Fleming, Honey Dijon, Kembra Pfahler, Joey Gabriel, Eliza Douglas, Johanna Constantine, and Nomi Ruiz, were filmed at close range on a rotating stage and simultaneously projected on a giant screen behind the musicians, forming a hypnotic and transformative axis of modern femininity. TURNING became a meditation on a complex and unacknowledged frontier of underground urban intersectional feminism. Combining concert documentation with intimate testimonial interviews, the film is forged from footage of concerts hailed by “Le Monde” as “concert-manifeste transsexuel.”
