Bootleg Video: Helmet-Cam Test
5m 14s
Early on in the production of VIDEODROME, David Cronenberg and his crew shot several short video sequences that were later excerpted in the film. When Max Renn puts on Barry Convex’s prototype helmet midway through the film, he experiences a hallucination. David Cronenberg asked special video effects supervisor Michael Lennick and his crew to design an effect that would portray Max’s point of view from inside the helmet. After some experimentation, Lennick presented this demo reel to Cronenberg, which first shows the unaltered footage and then the same segment with increasing levels of distortion. Shot without sound, the footage is accompanied by commentary from Lennick.
