This wildly over-the-top, ultracamp comedy swathes Shirley MacLaine (in a role originally intended for Marilyn Monroe before her death) in an eye-popping array of Edith Head–designed gowns as Louisa Foster, a fabulously wealthy widow several times over whose improbably tragic romantic history unfolds in flashback as she relates her story to a psychiatrist. The men—played by no less than Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dean Martin, Gene Kelly, Dick Van Dyke, and Bob Cummings—each find love and fortune, before meeting their end in a most outrageous way, leaving Louisa sick of money and longing for the simple life.
