Inspired by the story of Gaëtan Dugas—the gay French Canadian flight attendant wrongly blamed for being “patient zero” in the North American AIDS epidemic—John Greyson’s daring and controversial New Queer Cinema classic reimagines an episode of queer persecution as a subversive camp musical. Having discovered the Fountain of Youth, nineteenth-century explorer Richard Francis Burton is now working as a taxidermist at Toronto’s Museum of Natural History. While preparing an exhibit on the AIDS crisis, he is visited by the ghost of Patient Zero, who helps him find both love and the truth about AIDS.
