Producer Nathan Kroll was responsible for documenting Martha Graham’s work in the films A DANCER’S WORLD, APPALACHIAN SPRING, and NIGHT JOURNEY. Recorded in 1995, Kroll here describes the origins of the films and the experience of working with Graham. His comments are illustrated with film clips and stills.
This documentary, produced for PBS’s “American Masters” series, traces Martha Graham’s career from her early days with the Denishawn Company through the formation of her own troupe and her emergence as one of the most important figures in twentieth-century dance.
In 1975 the Martha Graham Dance Company filmed a technique demonstration in three parts. Presented here are excerpts from that film, which Graham narrates.
This new documentary features interviews with six former Graham dancers: Mimi Cole, Mary Kinkson, Linda Hodes, Stuart Hodes, Yuriko Kikuchi, and Ethel Winter. All six were longtime members of the Martha Graham Dance Company and appear in the films produced by Nathan Kroll.
