Directed by Hlynur Pálmason • 2017 • Iceland, Denmark
Starring Elliott Crosset Hove, Simon Sears, Vic Carmen Sonne
A simmering drama of isolation, sibling rivalry, and revenge plays out amid the stark, surreal landscape of a remote limestone quarry in the expressionistically stylized feature debut from visual artist turned filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason. Brothers Johan (Simon Sears) and Emil (Elliott Crosset Hove) toil together in an insular chalk-mining community. While Johan has adjusted to the rugged lifestyle, the troubled Emil is an outsider among the other men. When a rift forms between the two brothers, the stage is set for an eruption of jealousy, betrayal, and startling violence.
