Every Thursday, a group of students from the University of Ibadan, the oldest in Nigeria, organizes a film club, transforming a small lecture hall into a vibrant forum where they develop a critical voice, using cinema as a springboard to discuss an array of contemporary political and social issues. “Coconut-head generation”—a derogatory term intended to deride supposedly shallow, empty-headed youth—takes on a whole new meaning when these passionate and engaged students turn this stigma around to assert their freedom of thought.
