Directed by Amalia Ulman • 2021 • United States, Spain
Starring Ale Ulman, Amalia Ulman
A mother and daughter with a taste for the high life grift their way through postrecession Spain in the appealingly dry, deadpan feature debut from artist turned filmmaker Amalia Ulman. She plays wannabe fashion stylist Leo, while her real-life mom Ale Ulman plays Maria, her glamorous, eccentric mother. Facing eviction and dim economic prospects, the pair turn to scamming and petty crime to keep up the comfortable lifestyle they’re accustomed to. They may not be able to pay the bills, but at least they can continue to look fabulous. Shot in cool, lo-fi monochrome and graced with a subtly surreal absurdist wit, EL PLANETA is both a winning mother-daughter hangout movie and a wry commentary on our image-obsessed hustle culture.
