Directed by Abba Makama • 2019 • Nigeria
Starring Seun Ajayi, Judith Audu, Tope Tedela
Raymond (Seun Ajayi) is a security guard and general layabout whose main preoccupations are checking out women and escaping the bustle of Lagos for the countryside. Despite—or because of—his apparent “averageness,” he’s beset by surreal dreams of a traditional Okoroshi (ancestral spirit) masquerade. When he awakes one morning to find himself transformed into a mute, purple spirit, he must navigate Lagos in this new form on a journey that takes him across the city, to the club, and into a secret society. Merging influences from Nollywood and North American music videos with a boldly inventive camp aesthetic, director Abba Makama crafts a colorfully Kafkesque picaresque that raises probing questions about modernity and masculinity.
